Global error estimation and the backward differentiation formulas

The way in which global error estimates might be used to control global error is discussed. Various global error estimation techniques are surveyed with special attention to defect correction in the discrete realm (or “difference correction”) and to those techniques that use a continuous approximation to the solution. The problems of stiffness and rapidly varying stepsize is discussed for global error estimation for the BDFs and an unusual solution proposed.
