A nonlinear boundary value problem arising from competition in the chemostat

A boundary value problem with two parameters for two coupled second order nonlinear ordinary differential equations is considered. This problem arises in a study of chemostats without a well-mixing hypothesis. The existence of a solution in the interior of the positive cone is established via two bifurcations. Some open questions are pointed out.
