• A new fractional order Gronwall inequality with time delay is developed, which can be applied to investigate the stability or synchronization of some fractional order neural networks with time delay. Moreover, it is less conservative than the existing one [47, Theorem 2.5].

• A new criterion for finite-time synchronization of FMNNs with time delay is derived.

• Two numerical examples are exhibited to illustrate the effectiveness of the obtained results.
