• Unsteady of the fluid flow and heat transfer of natural convection of viscoelastic non-Newtonian fluid flow over a forward facing step was studied.

• The nonlinear equations are solved using a developed finite difference method mixed with a L-1 algorithm.

• The thermal and velocity boundary layer of the Maxwell fluid is higher than Newtonian fluid.

• The Nusselt number for the ordinary Maxwell fluid flow is greater than the Newtonian fluid flow over a backward facing step and flat plate.
