• We propose a multilayer network model that consider the coupling effect of group selection and network reciprocity under spatial the prisoner’s dilemma game, and find that it could promote cooperation greatly.

• We explore the two kinds of updating rules which are deterministic updating rule and stochastic updating rule, finding different phenomena under these.

• We explore two key parameters called evolution frequency and the imitation rate, both of which play key roles on the evolution process in our model.
