A logical framework for the correction of spelling errors in electronic documents

We propose a method for the correction of spelling errors found in electronic documents which is derived from a logical analysis of the problem. Specifically, set-theoretical definitions are given for similarity relations which describe certain properties which character strings may have in common. These definitions are then directly encoded into a PROLOG program. The advantages and disadvantages of this method are discussed, and some suggestions for further research are made. A detailed literature review is offered in order to place this method in perspective.
