Character recognition by complex filtering in reading machines

In order to investigate the possibility of constructing a compact and relatively simple character recognizing reading machine for the blind, a character recognizer has been built and tested with 44 different symbols. This device is based on correlation with a Fourier transform hologram in a coherent optical system. The symbols tested consisted of the lower case Swedish alphabet, the numerals 0–9 and 5 punctuation marks. The results show that, provided an appropriate input device can be constructed, it is possible to build a reading machine capable of reading one printed character at a time with an accuracy sufficient for most reading purposes.
