摘要

A pattern recognition program is described which was used to study handprinted characters in the absence of any information concerning the orientation of the characters. The program generates an orientation free description of a sample pattern in which inflection points play a central role. It identifies the sample by comparing its description with representative descriptions from previous samples which act as models. It detects differences between the description of a sample and the description of a model and is able to learn when a combination of differences should be judged as being significant.
