A generalization and clarification of the waller-kraft wish list

The Waller-Kraft wish list is a collection of desired information retrieval system properties that has been discussed often. We show that there are certain ambiguities in the list as it currently exists, ambiguities caused by two distinct uses of the single phrase “query term weight.” Examples of the problems arising from the ambiguity are given, and shown to be solvable if the uses are kept distinct. A new wish list that properly distinguishes the meanings is created and discussed.
