The knowledge engineering basis of expert systems

One definition of knowledge is information available to the individual from internal or external sources about relationships and rules that describe organized human activities. Methods that permit the development of mathematical or computer analyses of these activities may be termed knowledge engineering. Problem-solving methods that result from such analyses are termed expert systems. This paper presents the background of knowledge structure and knowledge engineering leading to expert systems, their applications, and implications for the future.
