ESMP—expert system for medicine prescription

An expert system for prescribing medicine (ESMP) is presented in this paper. ESMP is a prototype developed to help general practitioners prescribe a wider range of medicines, having already defined the symptoms. The scope of the project is limited to commonly prescribed drugs for general clinical illnesses. The system gives the physician a list of alternative medicines available, their possible side effects when used alone and with other combinations of medicines, and the dosages and precautions. In doing so, the system takes into consideration all available information on the illness, the medicine content and combination, and the age of the patient. The system also has a database of patient medical records attached to it. This helps the physician keep track of the medicines prescribed for each of his or her patients.
