An algorithm for estimating small scale differences between two digital images

An algorithm which generates a digital image representing an estimate of the difference between two individually distorted digital images is described. The process first approximates the nonlinear transformation that is necessary to obtain spatial registration of the two images under comparison. Some of the intensity statistics are then matched on a local area basis in order to ultimately allow differencing of the two images for the purpose of estimating small scale differences between the two images. Additional generalizations of the technique are also discussed.
