• A new Chinese-Herbs dataset is constructed, supporting the research of Chinese herbal recognition and machine learning.

• A new Attentional Pyramid Networks is proposed, where competitive attention and spatial collaborative attention are proposed.

• The proposed CA selectively emphasizes the features of different level whereas SCA quantifies the importance of each region.

• A framework with APN for Chinese herbal recognition is proposed. Experiment results verify the effectiveness of our methods.
