Handwriter identification from one-bit quantized pressure patterns

The timing information contained in the on/off paper motions of handwriting is analyzed for its applicability to the problem of handwriter identification. Three different experiments on a data base of ten signatures from nine individuals are analyzed in terms of Type I and Type II error probabilities. Type I errors are found to be high (30–50%) while Type II errors are found to be low (4–12%). Analysis of the results suggests that one-bit pressure patterns are usable in a sequential handwriter recognition scheme for first stage screening of incoming signatures.
