Rapid recognition of object outlines in reduced resolution images

In this paper we describe a procedure for rapid determination of object outlines from reduced resolution images. Local edges are determined in both the horizontal and vertical directions from the relative grey levels on either side of the edge. These local edges are connected in groups and the horizontal and vertical edge groups are then linked to form a closed curve. Pattern recognition of the object outline is performed on the curve of averaged successive angular deflection vs position along the outline. Applications of the procedure to robot vision are discussed.
