Multicriteria tools for the trade-off analysis in rural planning between economic and environmental objectives

In this article, a multicriteria approach combining several multiattribute methods is presented for the analysis of the trade-offs between economic and environmental objectives in rural planning. After separate aggregation of the economic and ecological criteria, the pareto-efficient solutions are identified. These solutions are further analyzed using a discrete version of the compromise programming. To test the sensitivity for changes in the weights, the method is combined with a method calculating the best and worst score for the distance function used in the compromise technique. For larger problems, an integer programming version of the method has been developed allowing to extend the scope of applications.
