The generalization of special functions

摘要

The question of what special functions should be taken to be is addressed. Using examples of generalizations that have proved useful, with special reference to those developed by Chaudhry and me, an attempt is made to formulate criteria for guiding us in the search for worth while generalizations of special functions.
