Sampling intensity for monitoring of environmental systems

Costs of monitoring environmental systems may be reduced by comparing the cost of a small sample taken frequently with the cost of a larger sample taken less frequently. For multivariable monitoring, each variable may require a different sample size, which will depend on the interval between sampling times. Methods of making appropriate cost computations are presented.
