Aspects of multigrid methods for problems in three dimensions

Smoothing methods are analyzed for use in multigrid methods applied to flow problems in three dimensions. A three-dimensional version of incomplete block factorization is described. The anisotropic diffusion and convection-diffusion equations are used as model problems. Unlike the two-dimensional case, none of the smoothing methods considered is suitable for all relevant values of the physical parameters.
