摘要

Models in business and management processes often draw on analogs for explanation in formulation. The basic principles of modeling by analogy are discussed and issues related to the support of this modeling approach through the augmentation of functions provided by model management systems (MMS) are examined. The majority of recent research in MMS focuses on understanding and supporting model formulation from a ‘blank sheet’ approach. In reality, however, human modelers frequently use analogical thinking to overcome cognitive limitations. Other factors such as time pressure and limited opportunity for concentration drive decision makers to seek analogous situations to accelerate the model building process. Given that one goal of MMS is to improve modeling productivity, there is a significant opportunity to leverage analogical skills in an MMS that supports model building through a process of support for analogical reasoning.
