A bin-tree oriented iconic indexing scheme for retrieving symbolic pictures

To retrieve pictures from symbolic image databases, we need to discriminate the similarity among pictures. To provide sufficient information for discrimination among pictures, a good data structure is necessary to identify objects and to specify the spatial relationships among objects in a picture. In this paper, we propose the bin-tree oriented structure as a new representation for manipulating spatial relationships among objects. Algorithms are also devised for retrieving symbolic pictures. Compared with 2D-strings in time and storage complexities, we find that our scheme is indeed feasible.
