Modeling and evaluation of alternatives in information systems

A generalized graphical scheme for organizational modeling is proposed. Such a scheme is based on systems theory and general patterns of organizational processes regulation derived from empirical observation and experience. This type of modeling is shown to be useful in approaching the design of the components external to the computer of an information system, or doing external design. Alternative external designs or structures are related to organizational coordination structures and other concepts proposed in organization design theory. Since alternative designs generate alternative results, a quantitative approach is developed to evaluate such alternatives and select the most cost-effective one.
