Highlights:

• This study aims to explore whether and why the involvement of charities affects medical crowdfunding performance.

• A sequential exploratory-explanatory research design with two main studies is conducted.

• Charities could contribute more to the fundraising and participation performances of medical crowdfunding projects than individual fundraisers.

• Drawing on the elaboration likelihood model (ELM) and social capital theory, we considered a charity's reputation as a central route and its social capital as the peripheral route.

• The moderating effect of disease type on medical crowdfunding performance is also investigated.
