Category-universal witness discovery with attention mechanism in social network

•A category-universal witness discovery model is proposed based on deep learning.•Category feature is fused into tweet feature to enhance its semantic representation.•Performance of various deep neural architectures in witness discovery is analyzed.•A real-world dataset with rich categories is constructed for cross-category research.•Our model greatly improves the prediction accuracy on multiple real-world datasets.
