• Investigated the different effects of technostress on the cognitive load among low-stress and high-stress people.

• The ‘virtual kiosk test’ was developed to evaluate cognitive load (through eye tracking analysis) and performance under technostress.

• Under technostress, high-stress people experienced cognitive overload and consequently decreased performance.

• Under technostress, low-stress people felt moderate arousal and improved performance.

• Based on our findings, we proposed three implications for technostress relief (i.e., adaptive interface, multimodal interaction, and virtual reality training).
