Relative impact of print and database products on database producer expenses and income—A follow-up

Database producers who are also publishers of hardcopy A & I products are facing a decline in subscriptions to those products. Whether or not this decline is due to increased use of the online counterparts (migration) is immaterial to the economic reality of decreasing numbers of print subscriptions and a consequent loss of revenue derived from subscriptions. A previous article, to which this is a follow-up, suggested, via a thirteen year analysis of the finances of one major database producer, that the decreâse in subscription income must be compensated for by an increase in revenue from online use. The current article provides an update of the analysis (including the 14th year). It discusses the actions taken by that producer and the consequences of those actions.
