Extending the intelligent tutoring system paradigm: Sex therapy as intelligent tutoring

This paper attempts to demonstrate how principles derived from the study of intelligent tutoring systems can be applied to the development of artificial intelligence-based computer-assisted psychotherapy. Classic examples of intelligent tutoring systems are reviewed with a view to defining the necessary characteristics of a cognitive-behavioral tutor. A description of a new intelligent tutor called Sexpert for the evaluation and treatment of sexual dysfunction is presented including illustrative dialogues of typical tutoring-psychotherapy interchanges. Initial data concerning client interaction with and attitudes towards Sexpert are also presented.
