Mental disengagement mediates the effect of rumination on smartphone use: A latent growth curve analysis

作者:

Highlights:

• Using latent growth and structural equation models, we examined the relation of rumination to changes in smartphone use.

• We examined three coping strategies as parallel mediators between rumination and smartphone use.

• Mental disengagement fully mediated the relation between rumination and the initial level (intercept) of smartphone use.

• Problem-focused and socioemotional coping did not mediate the relation between rumination and smartphone use.

• We found that an objective measure of smartphone use is more valid than a self-report measure.
