Phubbing in romantic relationships and retaliation: A daily diary study

• Participants completed short daily diaries over 10 consecutive days.

• When daily partner phubbing was high, phubbees reported lower relationship satisfaction and greater anger/frustration.

• On days when perceived partner phubbing was high, phubbees reported greater resentment, curiosity and retaliation.

• No association between partner phubbing and phubbee well-being was found.

• Revenge, need for support and need for approval were all significant possible motivations for retaliation.
