Platform sharing: From reseller to marketplace

作者:

Highlights:

• We examine the motivations for an online retailer that exclusively resells goods to open its platform to competing sellers.

• The rule of the game between the online retailer and a competing seller is changed by the retailer’s platform opening strategy. The two parties have become cooperators from competitors.

• The retailer can comparatively control the seller’s retailing prices by manipulating the rent and commission charged.

• Platform sharing provides consumers with an additional channel from which to purchase products. However, consumers are at a disadvantage as they have to pay a higher price than before.

• The retailer's choice to open up its platform decreases social welfare.
