The solitude of stars. An analysis of the distributed excellence model of European universities

作者:

Highlights:

• A new definition of research excellence for universities is introduced, combining objective and subjective measures of excellence.

• A novel dataset is exploited, including several Scopus indicators for the period 2007–2010 disaggregated by 14 broad disciplinary areas.

• The evidence is striking: while US universities show excellence in as many as 7–8 disciplinary fields (out of 14), European universities show up in 1–2 fields only.

• The evidence is discussed in the light of institutional differences in the recruitment system and the governance of universities.
