Do we measure novelty when we analyze unusual combinations of cited references? A validation study of bibliometric novelty indicators based on F1000Prime data

作者:

Highlights:

• With the possibility of measuring novelty, the use of bibliometrics data for research evaluations has been extended.

• Novel combinations of cited elements (measured by unusual journal pairs) might point to excellent research (landmark papers).

• We investigated whether two indicators for measuring novelty bibliometrically measure what they propose to measure.

• Convergent validity of novelty indicators has been investigated by comparing them with novelty assessments by peers.

• The results point to the convergent validity of one of both investigated novelty indicators.
